Tips for Reading at Home
- Read everyday for 15-20 minutes
- Model Reading: Read to your child stories, the newspaper etc.. This teaches them what a fluent reader sounds like. Explain what questions you think of while reading, what you do when you don't know a word, stop and make connections (this reminds me of...)
- Guided Reading: Have your child read to you. Instead of giving them the answer when they come along a tricky word, get them to sound it out, use the picture and text clues. Ask them questions to check for understanding, ask them what this reminds them of etc... After, ask them to retell what you read trying to get them to focus on what the important details were.
